Thorough Thursday

Block A:  We worked on the 4th and final task for Shakespeare's "My Misstress' Eyes" sonnet.  You are to create a conceit (extended metaphor) of your own in a formal paragraph following the same format as my example with Miss Strangeworth.  Make sure that you have your speech and poem for class tomorrow because we will be rehearsing for our dramatic reading day on Monday!

Block C:  Phew - take a much needed rest tonight!!! Our synthesis essays will continue in class tomorrow.

Flurry-filled Friday

Block C:  We finished "Paul's Case" today - here are the questions that you need to do.  Point form is fine...

1.  What parts did you find confusing, interesting, disturbing etc?
2.  Do you think Paul's adventure sounds like fun? why or why not?
3.  What do you think of the story?
4.  Were you surprised by the ending?
5.  Is Paul artistic? What value does he find in art?
6.  What does art, his trip to New York, and his suicide all have in common?
7.  How does the author describe Paul's suicide?
8.  Do you think he is brave or cowardly? Why?

For Monday, please have the above questions finished, as well as the literary analysis for the story.  We talked about the Post Card Story assignment, but have not officially started it.  The expectation is for Monday that you have made your choice, of which of the three options you wish to explore in your short work of fiction.

Block A:  Complete Poetry Journal #1 for Monday.  In addition, please complete the chart for "The Road Not Taken" please avoid cliches when writing your theme statement!!!

1st Monday in November!

Block A:  Make sure to have your reading done for tomorrow's class - end of chapter 24 - with at least 4 sticky notes on main conflict and minor conflicts.

Block C:  Please finish up Poetry journal #3:  Choose a poem (at least 10 lines long) by a well-known poet:  Shelly, Keats, Byron, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, Browning, Donne, Tennyson etc. Print or copy it out.  Then, in point-form follow the TP-CASTT method of poetry analysis.  The only full sentence must be the theme.

Block D:  Please have a blank story map ready for tomorrow's class.  If you did not complete your cinquain character that needs to be done for tomorrow.

Block A:  Today we had a lesson of the expectations of writing at the grade 10 level, and we had time in class to work on the comic strip assignment.  Don't forget that the comic strip assignment is due tomorrow!

Block C:  Class was a bit disjointed today due to school pictures - but we were able to have a first group meeting - and most groups were able to complete their Discussion Organizer.  Tomorrow you will have a chance to complete the Task of the Day and work on your 2-column notes which is due on Monday!

Block D:  After the journal was collected - we started the writing process for persuasive paragraphs.  If you were not able to complete the outline it is to be completed for homework.

Block C

Today we reviewed some of the basics of grammar - including how to properly punctuate dialogue.

There was some class time to work on your personal narrative drafts in preparation for tomorrows class which will be spent editing and revising your first draft.  It should be double-spaced, minimum of 2 pages and maximum of 4 pages.

Block D

Today we reviewed the basics of writing proper paragraphs.  We completed the first couple of stages of the writing process; prewriting brainstorm, outline, and some were able to begin their drafts.  We will continue working on these on Thursday.

For tomorrow's class - make sure that you have your sticky notes filled with information on character and setting, and that you have read your section of the book in preparation for your first meeting with your lit circle.

Today we continued to work on the outline for our "Transformational Event" narrative essay.  People were asking good questions, and discussing their outlines with me.  I gave a handout of tips to writing your personal narrative, and the criteria for the essay which needs to be handed in along with your good copy.

For tomorrow's class we are going to review incorporating dialogue into a story, and some grammar before having more time to work on your essays.  First draft is due on Wednesday Sept. 15th for peer editing.

Block A

Today, we continued our study of the short story.  We finished "The Choice" plot line activity and then completed a close reading of "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty.

We finished class with a journal write on 1 of 3 topics:
1.  In ten years I will be...
2.  The idea of being in grade 10 is very...
3.  I expect this year to be...

We will finish the journal tomorrow in class and review paragraphs.
